The Chinese Corner during 2013 Lyon Festival of Lights

12-25-2013 10:28 BJT Special Report: 2013 Lyon Festival of Lights |

Crowded people flooded into Parc de La tête d'or in Lyon during the 2013 Lyon Festival of Lights, amazed at the gorgeous scene they saw. The park has been decorated with abundant Chinese items such as lanterns and shadow puppets where it is called the Chinese Corner.

On the inauguration of Tunnel Croix Rousse in Lyon, Mr. Mayor of Lyon said that France has a very old relation with China. That's why they want China to be involved into this festival.

"In the past, we are in Lyon, that Franco and China is in the city. And that was the place where in the past Mr. Zhou Enlai and Mr. Deng Xiaoping studied in Lyon some years ago. And since these time, we have a very strong relation with China," said Mr. Gérard Collomb, Mayor of Lyon.

It is the first time for Chinese elements to be involved in the Lyon Festival of Lights. Hundreds of thousands of visitors were attracted to appreciate the traditional Chinese scenary in the park.

"The Chinese Corner which I liked it a lot with all the lanterns and play of shadows. And the lanterns remind me that when you are little, and you see from far away, since they are all on trees, you can feel that they are Christmas balls on the Christmas trees. So it's something remind me of childhood and something else as well. It's very interesting," said a student in Lyon.

With 1500 lanterns hanging on the trees, the woods is created into such a beautiful scenary where visitors can not help taking photos. But this is just part of it. The Chinese Corner plays a wonderful role in the use of spacial layout.

"I hope it can be one step at one scene. People can start their trip in Chinese Corner right from the gate of Parc de La tête d'or. Then they can get across the lantern gate and wander through the Chinese pavilions before walking into the atmosphere of red lanterns. Visitors can walk along the lotus lanterns and place one on the lake. At last, they can taste the tea and wear the tea perfume at leaving. This project has adopted three spaces, namely air, land and water surface, to work as a combination. Five senses have also been in use to work as a whole. I think that aims to show the visitors are more than observers, but participants in terms of behaviors, vision, smell or touch," said Li Li, the designer of the Chinese Corner.

During the 2013 Lyon Festival of Lights, abundant modern light installations and high technology of lights are demonstrated. Visitors just can't help marveling at the dazzling light shows. However, compared with these modern light works, the Chinese Corner is purely in a simple and traditional Chinese way. But does the traditional Chinese elements clash with the modern light techniques?

"The great innovation of this festival is not an innovation, is the Chinese Corner because it's so simple, it's only big shadow. For me, that is an innovation. We are not in the contest of technology, we are in the contest of emotion. When you go to the park of Parc de La tête d'or, you have installations of Chinese Corner. Chinese Corner is traditional in China. It’ s very nice with the Lantern Festival, like a traditional event in China. And we have no technology, only a little lamps and shadows. And it's magical. A lot of Lyonnaise of Lyon discovered the tradition of China," said Jean-Francois Zurawick, the artistic director of this event.

Besides the design by Li Li, the Chinese Corner received some presents from two Chinese cities, two copied Terra Cotta Warriors from Xi'an and two screens made of red lanterns from Guangzhou.
