01-01-2014 01:05 BJT

A fireworks display at Sydney Harbour has heralded the beginning of 2014. The fireworks show, themed Shine, attracted more than 1 million people. It’s the first time in over a decade that fireworks have been launched from the tops of the four sails of the Opera House.

Artist and musician Reg Mombassa, this year’s creative ambassador, has worked with the fireworks team for over a year. The Mayor of Sydney, Clover Moore, described this year’s show as one of the most creative fireworks display Sydney has seen. More than a billion people worldwide were expected to tune into the fireworks on televison.

Earlier, New Zealand welcomed in the new year with a fireworks display. Fireworks were set off over the city’s 328 metre high Sky Tower near the harbour, to the sound of horns and cheering crowds.
