Fireworks dazzle spectators at world's tallest building

01-01-2014 05:24 BJT

The new year has arrived in the United Arab Emirates... and a fireworks spectacle lit up the world’s tallest tower, the Burj Khalifa, as the clock hit midnight on New Year’s Eve.

Dubai attempted to set a new world record for the largest fireworks display. Staff managing the event said the 6-minute extravaganza included about 500 thousand fireworks from four hundred firing locations. The display covered 48 kilometers of seafront.

The performance required one hundred computers to control the event. And more than 200 expert technicians put in five thousand hours of work to ensure that the firework’s timing was accurate down to the millisecond. A synchronized light and water show also took place at Dubai Festival City.
