New photos of Earth taken by China’s moon lander

01-17-2014 18:04 BJT Special Report: Chang’e-3 Lunar Probe |

More than a month after Chang’e 3’s successful Moon landing, China has released new photos of the Earth, taken from the moon, by the mission’s lander.

Two photos were shot by the lander’s camera on December the 22nd, the other was shot on the 25th, Christmas Day. The pictures are of a partial Earth, as evening approaches. Scientists say the lander is unable to take a picture of the full earth that’s because when the Earth is in full sunlight, the Moon landing site is in shadow, meaning the lander’s solar panel can’t provide enough power for the camera.

So far, over 4,600 photos have been taken during the mission. It’s the first time a Chinese spacecraft has photographed the earth from a celestial body.
