Volunteers call for less fireworks over festival reason to reduce pollution

01-26-2014 10:39 BJT Special Report: 2014 Spring Festival |

Fireworks displays have been a traditional element to mark important occasions in China, like the Spring Festival. However, they are also a major contributor to the pollution and the smoggy weather. Volunteers in Beijing have launched a new initiative to encourage the public to use less fireworks over the festival season.

7p.m. at Xidan, Beijing’s traditional commercial hub.

People gathered at a shopping mall, preparing for the upcoming Spring Festival celebration.

All of a sudden, a familiar song started playing.

Volunteers in Beijing have launched a new initiative to encourage the public to use less fireworks over the festival season.

"Flash mob dance is quite popular now, that’s why we adopt such a special performance. I hope people can feel our passion." Volunteer Wang Ying said.

An atmosphere of fun, and an engaging rhythm.

People at the mall stopped to look, mesmerised by the flash mob’s performance.

While dancing, the volunteers wear face masks, reminding the public of the worsening air quality, and to avoid fireworks displays during the national celebration.

Altogether volunteers performed four songs to the public.

The organizers say the performance was only prepared in a very short period of time.

They hope their performance will inspire the public to contribute to a cleaner and bluer sky.
