DPRK threatens to scrap deal if ROK-US joint drills go ahead

The DPRK has protested against an annual joint drill by the US and South Korea, threatening to scrap a deal to hold reunions between families separated by the Korean War. The announcement came only a day after the two Koreas reached the deal.

The DPRK’s state TV carried the announcement on Thursday, calling the joint war games "reckless".

The DPRK’s National Defense Commission also made a similar statement. The commission cited negative reports by some South Korean media regarding DPRK leader Kim Jong Un’s recent visit to childcare centers. It said the reunion program could be reviewed if the South continued slandering its supreme dignity.

South Korea, however, has shown no intention of changing its plans to hold the drills.

"The Key Resolve and Foal Eagle are annual defensive exercises for the defence of the Korean peninsula. So, the exercises will go ahead as usual apart from the reunion of the separated families," said Kim Min-Seok, spokesperson of South Korea’s Defence Ministry.

The Korean War six decades ago left millions of families divided. More than 70,000 South Koreans have been seeking to meet lost family members. South Korea and the DPRK agreed to allow war-divided families to meet for five days in late February for the first time since 2010.

But the DPRK’s U turn on Thursday brought up fresh memories from September 2013. Pyongyang abruptly cancelled family reunions last year after accusing Seoul of preparing for war drills and other hostile acts.
