Xi Jinping wishes Sochi Winter Olympics a success

Chinese President Xi Jinping attended the opening ceromony at the invitation of his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin. The sports event coincides with Chinese Lunar New Year. President Xi left for Sochi before the national holiday ended.

It's Chinese President Xi Jinping's first foreign visit of the New Year. It's also the first time a Chinese president has attended a major sports event overseas.

A record 87 delegations are taking part in the Sochi Games which features 98 medal events.

At the opening ceremony, Xi rose from his seat and waved to the Chinese delegation, which has 138 members, including 65 athletes.

Earlier in the day, President Xi met Chinese athletes and coaches giving a boost to their morale.

Xi said that Chinese people are following the games closely, and called for continued efforts to make China a strong sports power.

He also wished the athletes success at the Games, but added that good results are not reflected merely in the number of medals, but more in the Olympic spirit they demonstrate.

Before the opening ceremony, President Xi met Olympic chief Thomas Bach.

Bach said the IOC appreciates China's support for the Olympics.

President Xi said that China strongly supports Russia's efforts to host the Games, and wished the 16-day Sochi Olympic games a success.
