Getting prepared for a fruitful new year.

For Cirenyangzong, the Tibetan New Year is about spending time with her family.

One of the main priorities is to clean the house.

Cirenyangzong, Lhasa resident, said, "We sweep the floors in order to keep away and get rid of the bad things, such as disease and disaster. We hope everyone will be healthy and happy in the new year."

Another important tradition is making "Guthuk", a soup with dumplings.

As night falls, it’s time for the most important ceremony to drive away the evil spirits.

Cirenyangzong’s husband Cidanduoji volunteered to do it.

He held a torch and waved it at every corner of the house, yelling “Out, out comes the evil.”

At the end of the ritual, he walked outside and threw the burnt torch out onto the road.

Cidanduoji, Lhasa resident, said, “This is to exorcise the ghosts. Make sure you do not look back until you are home. Otherwise, the bad luck will follow you.”

The Cirenyangzong family is just one of 3 million Tibetans celebrating the New Year.
