Media scramble outside court for Oscar Pistorius' trial

03-04-2014 07:46 BJT

By CCTV correspondent Guy Henderson

In contrast to that controlled court environment, outside, the media and public had free reign.

The expected scramble as the rain beat down outside court.

First, the arrival of the victim Reeva Steenkamp's mother. A year spent coming to terms mostly in private with the loss of her daughter. Now thrust into the public glare, but composed as she pushed her way through the crowds.

Carl Pistorius arrived shortly after. Through his brother's rise to stardom, perhaps more used to cameras. But nothing like this. Members of the public lined the streets - just to catch a glimpse.

And just a glimpse it was. In came the accused, straight through the front door, somehow, as the media's back was turned.

But the public won't miss much in the weeks ahead. Most of the proceedings are being broadcast live.

And watching over the North Gauteng High Court, make shift studios for broadcasters to pick every word apart.

A global icon, who's fall from grace, has led to interest far beyond these shores.

When court adjourned, both families filed out again, to face the inevitable wall of journalists. They'll have to get used to it.

Ultimately, it's what happens inside court that will determine Oscar Pistorius's fate. But it's outside that the enormous level of public interest is most apparent. Scrums like this will be inevitable almost every day. A circus that's bound to continue until the end of this trial. However long it takes.
