Unseeded Martinez Sanchez stuns Jankovic in Rome final

Tennis fans were treated to a memorable matchup at the Italian Open final on Saturday. Unseeded Spaniard Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez would try to beat the odds against world number seven Jelena Jankovic. The Serbian had just conquered not one, but both of the Williams sisters and was on a roll going into the final round.

Jankovic knocked out world number one Serena Williams in the semifinals, and was bidding for her third Italian Open title against Martinez Sanchez. The Spaniard got off to a much better start and raced into a 5-2 lead in Rome.

Martinez Sanchez reached set point on her serve, and and won the opener with a smash volley.

Jankovic made it a match in the second set. But Martinez Sanchez came through when she converted her second set point. The Spaniard held on to wrap up a 7-6, 7-5 win in two hours 20 minutes. Martinez Sanchez also won WTA titles in Bogota and Bastad in 2009.
