World number one Roger Federer continued his French Open warmup on red clay. But he would find the going tough in the semi-final round against Albert Montanes on Saturday.

Heavy rain delayed play on semi-finals day in Portugal. And once the action started, Federer soon found himself in trouble against the tournament's defending champion.

The world number one dropped his serve early on. And the Spaniard played some inspired tennis on his favourite surface.

Montanes broke Federer's serve again to lead by three games before serving out to take the first set 6-2.

Federer showed glimpses of his best at the start of the second set. The Swiss used the drop shot strategy which helped him knock off Frenchman Arnaud Clement in the previous round.

But Montanes stayed in touch, and showed he was pretty good with the drop shot, too. The players headed into a tense second-set tiebreaker.

Federer led by three points in the tiebreak, but Montanes fought back. The world number 34 converted his first match point when the Swiss went long with a backhand. Montanes goes through to his eighth ATP World Tour final, all on clay.

Roger Federer said, "Yeah, movement's still a bit slow. I don't have full confidence in my movement, you know, it's's there but I just still think I could do better and so that's something, I'm surprised it's not there because I've put in a lot of hard work. Maybe it's the confidence to do with reading the plays."'
