The world number 30 Jurgen Melzer took the court in search of his best ever result in an ATP World Tour Masters 1000. He faced a tough battle against sixth seeded Fernando Verdasco in Madrid.

This match featured nine breaks of serve, and the Austrian got the upper hand by breaking in the pivotal 11th game of the first set. Melzer won the opening act 7-5. Melzer dominated the second set and eventually emerged a 7-5, 6-3 winner in just under two hours. Verdasco closed his campaign at his hometown tournament in the third round.
