Kingston hits 65 to hold two-shot lead

Golf fans are getting to know some new faces during the opening round at a new tournament in Spain. James Kingston grabbed the headlines alongside Spanish standout Alvaro Velasco at the inaugural Iberdrola Open Cala Millor Mallorca on Thursday.

Jose Manuel Lara was among a large Spanish contingent hoping to do well in the tournament. He highlighted his round with a birdie at the fourth hole, but had to settle for a one-under-par 69 and a share of seventh place on the leaderboard.

Gary Murphy had an unusual day. The Irishman got to four-under par after starting on the tenth, but dropped back to level par in five holes, before birdies at the seventh and eighth took him back to two under at the clubhouse.

Murphy led a quartet of players at minus two, including Spain's Alejandro Canizares. Canizares recorded 10 straight pars after opening up with a birdie at the first hole. He dropped a shot at the 12th to go back to level par, but two more birdies at the 14th and 16th left the Spanish golfer at two under.

Alvaro Velasco was the best of the local contingent. He made two birdies at the opening hole, and followed that up with three more on his back nine. He included a nice chip shot at the sixth from an awkward lie and went to three under par. But it was not enough for the lead. That went to James Kingston. The 44-year-old made six birdies. He committed his only mistake with a bogey at the 413-yard third hole. But the South African made up for it with three birdies, and finished the round with a five-under par 65. Kingston takes a two-shot lead into second round.
