Ballack to miss World Cup due to injury

It's the news German fans hoped they would not hear but team captain Michael Ballack is out of the world cup after picking up an injury for his club side Chelsea in their FA cup victory over Portsmouth. The German captain has been ruled out of this summer's world cup.

Michael Ballack said, "A diagnosis like this two, three weeks before a World Cup is bitter. But it's soccer, it happens and the show must go on."

Ballack flew to Germany late on Sunday to be examined by national team and Bayern Munich doctor. Ballack's ankle was heavily swollen but doctors have revealed the player has torn ankle ligaments.

The German football federation said he should make a full recovery and won't be able to train for at least eight weeks. Ballack, has made 98 appearances for Germany and scored 42 goals. The challenge came from Portsmouth's midfielder Kevin Prince Boatang in the first half.
