2008 runners-up China took on South Korea in Group B of the opening match in Chengdu, China.

China nearly took the lead after 22 minutes as an in-swinging free-kick from Bi Yan missed everyone inside the area. South Korea's goalkeeper Kim Jung-mi was rooted to the spot, the ball came back off the post and was hacked clear.

In the second half South Korea were also denied by the woodwork. Cho So-hyun controlled a floating cross on six yards out only to see her effort deflected onto the crossbar and away to safety.

In stoppage time Korea again came close to claiming the three points as Ji So-yun found space on the edge of the area but clipped her effort over Zhang Yanru and onto the face of the crossbar. South Korea hit the woodwork four times in total during the match but had to settle for a 0-0 draw.
