Barcelona have been brisk in the transfer market and signed Spanish striker David Villa from Valencia for 40 million euros. The move reinforces the Catalan giants claim of being the number one side in world football and could prove a shroud piece of business before proceedings get underway in South Africa.

Valencia president Manuel Llorente says they accepted Barca's bid for their prized asset despite the player finding the back of the net 21 times in the league to finish his fifth consecutive campaign as the club's top scorer. The 28-year-old is Spain's second-highest scorer with 36 goals from 55 matches, and will be spearheading his country's World Cup campaign. Barcelona confirmed on their website that Villa would sign a four-year contract with an option for one more year.
