After a huge comeback win over Fiji to reach the finals of the London leg of the IRB Sevens World Series, Australia came up against South Africa in the final. And once again, the resiliency of Australia would shine through.

Australia was out early, leading 7-0 on the stroke of half-time though, Fabian Juries' opportunist chip-and-chase drew the 'Boks' level.

After the break, James Stannard found a gap in the South African defence to put his Australian side back into the lead.

The South Africans had pulled off a surprise in the semi-finals, defeating overall series leaders Samoa 24-12. Juries was looking to take his side all the way. Another break, another try and, with the conversion, a 14-12 lead.

With two minutes to go, the tournament's outstanding forward Henry Vanderglas powered over the line for the game's crucial score. Australia now on top 19-14.

The inspired defence of Stannard ensured there would be no late heartbreak, his tackle denying the Boks Cecil Afrika in the dying seconds. Australia holds on, for surprisingly, their first Cup title on the IRB Sevens World Series since Brisbane in 2002.

Australia though, remain well adrift of New Zealand and leaders Samoa in the overall standings.
