France have had a miserable time of it at the World Cup and there wasn't any sign of improvement when they went head to head with Mexico in group A.

The deadlock was broken in the 64th minute when Mexico succeeded in springing the offside trap. Javier Hernandez ran onto Rafael Marquez's pass and rounded goalkeeper Hugo Lloris before guiding the ball home. According to the replay, Hernandez was just onside with the France defender when his teammate made the defense shredding pass.

That goal pushed France to the brink of elimination, yet nobody took charge and grabbed the game by the scruff of the neck.

In the 79th minute, Eric Abidal brought down Pablo Barrera in the penalty box. The judge showed no hesitation in pointing to the spot. Veteran Blanco hit it hard and low, making it 2-0 with an excellent penalty.

France coach Raymond Demenech said, "I don't want to blame anyone. Tonight we are just so depressed. But we still have another game later on. We still have a tiny chance to advance, but it is not up to France to decide. We will hold on and we can adjust ourselves."

France left winger Florent Malouda said, "Now we can only fight for self respect. Losing like this is a shame. The match just ended. I don't know what to say. It wouldn't be possible if we were going without a win."

Mexico Captain Rafael Marquez said, "We played in full strength. We had a beautiful game. Now we will focus on the next match."
