Germany has edged Ghana 1-0 (one-to-nil) in their last World Cup Group D match, to advance to the tournament's knockout stage.
Ghana is also headed to the last 16, thanks to a better goal differential than Australia, which beat Serbia 2-1 (two-to-one) in Wednesday evening's other group competition.
Mesut Oezil rifled a left-footed shot high into the net from outside the box, to break the deadlock in the 60th minute. Ghana threatened in the 66th, but German captain Philipp Lahm stretched wide to deftly block Andre Ayew's shot. Germany will meet old nemesis England, while Ghana is set to face the US in the next round. Those winners will move on to the quarterfinals.
