Brazil will need to cope with a key injury as it enters its World Cup quarter-final against the Netherlands. The team doctor said Galatasaray midfielder Elano will not take part in the game on Friday, because of a hurt ankle.
The 29-year-old suffered the injury during a challenge from a Cote D'Ivoire defender in Brazil's 3-1 group stage win. Elano's been resting since, but medical staffers say it's possible that his tournament could be over. Brazil beat Chile in the final 16 on Monday. Manager Dunga put the rest of his players through a light training session at their base outside Johannesburg on Wednesday, to get their legs ready for a tough Netherlands team.
The Dutch are expected to provide a sterner test for Brazil than Chile did. The Netherlands has won all four of its games in South Africa so far, to go along with victories in all of the team's qualification matches. Overall, the two national squads have met nine times. The five-time world champions from Brazil enjoy a slight edge in the head-to-head record, with three wins to the Netherlands' two. The teams have drawn four times.
