Tour of Qinghai Lake starts

The Tour of Qinghai Lake is off and underway here in China. Riders took part in an opening ceremony then began the race.

A total of 130 riders from 21 teams set off to tame a 72 kilometer, picturesque and challenging first stage. Seven teams are new-comers to the Tour of Qinghai Lake.

The event is the highest altitude cycling event in the world, so weather conditions always provide a tougher challenge for the riders.

Rainy weather caused some competitors to crash, and 12 of them withdrew from the action.

Yuriy Metlushenko from Ukraine's Amore Vita team finished first with the winning time of one hour 32.18 minutes.
