With the 2010 FIBA Basketball World Championships creeping up on us, China's most famous player, Yao Ming, was holding court on Thursday.
At the end of August, the World title will be decided and Yao talked about his experiences at the event with the media.
Yao Ming's debut tournament back in 2002 was one to forget. China could only register one win, a 96-82 victory over Algeria, but the side would exit the tournament With 6 losses, and be ranked 12.
Yao said, "Actually we know none of the International teams' tactics, no matter Oceania, South America, Europe or Africa."
After the 2004 Athens Olympic, Yao Ming realized that things needed changing. And at the Japanese World Championship two years later, China took on Italy in the group stages and lost.
He said, "We were broken down at the third quarter suddenly. The points at the first half went on neck and neck. We have tried, and at that time, I can treat the win or the loss calmly."
At the 2006 Championships, China lost to Italy 69-84 but managed to get through to the knock out stages. However they went down to a big loss 64-95 to Greece, only ranked 15th place.
He also said, "The problem is that I have watched the CBA match, nearly no teams have the tactics like International teams, seldom focused on how to defend. I was edified by Jeff Van Gundy. And people will ask why Jonas Kazlauskas corrects it. I still want to say watching the video is different from playing on court."
It's not the players fault, they are not as same as in 2004, they don't want to play. It owns to no experience. Morale must be combined with ability. A team can not have high morale if they keep losing, it's unrealistic."
