We begin with basketball at the Stankovic Continental Cup. China took the court after a dominating victory over Iran, and looked for its second tournament win when it took on Slovenia at Liuzhou.
The host team got off to a quick start. Washington Wizards' forward Yi Jianlian scored 11 points. But the Phoenix Suns' Goran Dragic played a key role for Slovenia. He kept the Slovenians competitive against the Chinese side, and the Europeans took the lead over China in the first half.
Veteran Wang Zhizhi managed to cut the Chinese deficit in the second quarter, but China still trailed by three at the break.
Slovenia came out firing in the second half and increased its lead to eight points. China threatened to put some points together for a run at the Slovenian margin but could not catch up. The hosts were down by 7 after the third quarter.
Wang Zhizhi missed a three-pointer to start the fourth, but he redeemed himself with a rebound basket.
Slovenia's defense was tough to beat down the stretch, and the European side went on to upset China 75-71. China will next play for 3rd place in the tournament against Iran.
Australia edge Iran 69-60
Australia clinched a spot in Sunday's final and worked to finish the preliminaries with a perfect slate against Iran. NBA big man David Andersen hit from long range to make it 27-21 for unbeaten Australia in the second quarter.
Portland Trail Blazers guard Patrick Mills drained the three-pointer. Australia held a nine-point lead over Iran.
In the third quarter Mills picks the pocket of Iran's Mahdi Kamrani. He took it the other way for the basket as Australia stayed on top by 7.
But Iran would come back in the fourth quarter. Oshin Sahakian knocked down a three-pointer from the top of the key to tie it at 54-54.
Then, the Aussies finally took control with less than 90-seconds remaining. Mills created the first of two clutch baskets with a drive down the lane and a dish to Joe Ingles for a three-pointer. Then, Adam Gibson picked off a steal and found Brad Newley racing ahead for an easy basket. Australia went on to win it over Iran, 69-60.
