Bundesliga club Borussia Moenchengladbach met Liverpool in a pre-season friendly in Germany. The match was part of the Bundesliga club's 110th anniversary celebration on Sunday.

The party mood at Borussia-Park was raised a notch in the 8th minute. Daniel Ayala made a clumsy first touch and Algerian international Karim Matmour made him pay. Liverpool goalkeeper Diego Cavalieri had no chance to stop the shot. Matmour and Moenchengladbach lead 1-0.

Matmour came back for more in the 28th minute. But this time Cavalieri did have a chance, and made the most of it. (REPLAY) Cavalieri rises to the occasion in goal. Liverpool made the play on defense but struggled on the other end until the second half against the German club team.

Former Chelsea player Joe Cole came close to scoring on debut for the Reds with a long range strike, but he was denied with a spectacular stop. (REPLAY) Moenchengladbach keeper Logan Bailly rushed to the ball and kept the score 1-0.

Another Liverpool chance to equalize went by the boards when David Amoo headed wide in the 87th minute. Monchengladbach held on for a 1-0 win. Liverpool coach Roy Hodgson and his squad have plenty to think about ahead of their Premier League opener against Arsenal on August 15.
