Meanwhile, American Bershawn Jackson set a new stadium record of 47.65 seconds in the 400 hurdles. Javier Culson of Puerto Rico was a distant second in 48.50 and Angelo Taylor of the US was third in 49.57.

European 400-meter champion Tatyana Firova produced a fast final 30 meters to storm to victory. The American pair of Debbie Dunn and Francena McCorory had no chance to respond when the Russian stormed past, and they finished second and the third.

Darya Klishna of Russia beat a top-class field in the women's long jump with a leap of 6.78 meters. Brittney Reese of the United States was second with 6.75, and European silver medallist Naide Gomes of Portugal was third with 6.72.

In the javelin, Finland's Tero Pitkamaki, who finished third at the European Championships as Andreas Thorkildsen retained his title, gained a measure of revenge as a fifth round effort of 84.41 metres saw him displace the Norwegian world and Olympic champion from the top position.
