Wembley saw the English Premier League and FA Cup champions Chelsea face Manchester United in the curtain raiser to the season in the Community shield.

For both sides it was a chance to shake down the off season and blood new youngsters into the starting lines ups. It worked out better for United as Javier Fernandez made a big impact on his debut.

Chelsea lost three pre-season friendly games in a row heading into the clash, and manager Carlo Ancelotti admitted in the build up they needed a performance. But instead it was United who took control. Four minutes before the break Wayne Rooney picked out Antonio Valencia for a simple finish.

United collected a second 14 minutes from time.

Valencia broke down the right and his cross found Mexican striker Javier Hernandez - and the new signing bundled the ball home. Replays showed it was a less than skilful finish - the youngster mishitting his shot into his own face, but fate fortunes the brave 2-0.

Chelsea responded and Salomon Kalou pulled one back after United keeper Edwin Van Der Saar could only parry Daniel Sturridge's shot.

But United soon regained their two goal advantage. Dimitar Berbatov broke the offside trap, and chipped Chelsea's stand in goalkeeper Hilario to make it 3-1. United held on for the win. First blood to United in the title race they say as Sir Alex Ferguson's side look to start their season firing on all fronts.

Edwin Van Der Sar, Manchester United Goalkeeper, said, "Yeah, it's always nice of course to start with a win. We created the more chances so we deserved the result."

Chris Smalling, Manchester United Defender, said, "I think it is a good end to preseason and I think, maybe, this sort of strikes an early blow for their preparations. But, hopefully, it kicks us on to sort of many great things."

Didier Drogba, Chelsea Striker, said, "I think it is difficult, but we had a difficult pre-season - a lot of players were coming from holidays. I came back only 10 days ago, so I think we have a lot of players like this, coming back very late. So, it is difficult to be fit for only 10 days. So, we will need more time but the competition is starting next week. So, we have to find a solution."
