England were guaranteed their best ever Champions Trophy finish prior to the final taking place - their previous best having been fifth place. But they had the daunting task of beating defending champions Australia in the final.
A penalty corner in the sixth minute from Luke Doerner gave Australia a 1-0 lead and barely a minute later, they struck again. Glenn Turner made a great run, and laid the ball off to Desmond Abbott who blasted the ball into the back of the net to secure the fastest-ever two-nil lead.
With the signs looking ominous for England - the Kookaburras were far from finished.
Jason Wilson picked up a useful pass in the circle, and fired home without hesitation for a commanding three-goal lead. Jamie Dwyer struck for the Kookaburras 21 minutes from time, as Australia secured a clinical four-nil victory to win their third consecutive Champions Trophy Gold Medal.
