Chinese stars Zheng Jie and Li Na were both in action during separate matches in Montreal. But one would advance to the next round at the women's Rogers Cup.
Li Na dominated the court in her opening set against Victoria Azarekna. She broke Azarenka's serve in the fifth game and led the first set at 3-2.
But the set turned in Azarenka's favor after that. The world number 13 took over the set lead in just ten minutes behind strong serves and a change of pace on her groundstrokes. Li made 17 unforced errors, twice as many as her opponent's. Azarenka won the first set, 6-3.
Li Na started strong again in the second set, but she again lost control of the action and fell behind, 3-5. Li's errors began to add up and Azarenka finally took the set and the match 6-3, 6-3. China's Zheng Jie advanced to the next round by defeating Russian Elena Dementieva.
