The 2010 FIBA World Championship have kicked off with the opening ceremony at Istanbul's Sinan Erdem Arena. Many are calling this the most prominent sporting event Turkey has hosted in its history.
The glamorous evening featured performances by Turkish singers and dance groups as well as the internationally recognized troupe Cirque du Soleil.
The last program named "Children of the World" was performed by 300 hundred children and their coaches from around 110 countries and regions.
The championship will take place simultaneously in four Turkish cities, Istanbul, Ankara, Izmir and Kayseri, between Aug. 28 and Sept. 12.
