China faced Group B underdogs Cote D'Ivoire at the World Basketball Championship. The match was a must-win game for the Chinese if they were to progress from the group stages.
-midway through the first quarter, Washington Wizards forward Yi Jianlian backed in for a three point play, giving China a 3 point lead.
-Yi drove in for a baseline slam as China traded the lead with Cote d'Ivoire before then pulling away.
-But an ally-oop dunk saw the Africans battle back, making it 4 point game.
-late in the second frame China stretched their advantage thanks to a couple of three pointers by sharp shooters Wang Shipeng and Ding Junhui.
-however, in the third, Yi's thunderous drive-in slam put China up by 14 points, Yi capped 26 points and 9 boards.
-Yi continued to dominate the paint, exploiting poor defence before throwing down another jam.
-Wang converted a couple of free throws as China went on to close out an 83-73 victory.
