Zheng, got by Timea Bacsinszky of Switzerland 7-6, 7-6 in her opener. Over on the men's side, the top seeded player in action on Monday, was Robin Soderling...the fifth seed. He is through to round two, and will be joined by the 6th seed Nikolay Davydenko.

The Russian, opening his US Open campaign against American Michael Russell on Monday.

Russell looked impressive early as he broke Davydenko to lead 4-2.

However Davydenko, would take control after that...winning the first set 6-4 and taking the following two sets 6-1, 6-3.

Andy Roddick celebrated his 28th birthday with a 6-3, 6-2, 6-2 win over Stephane Robert of France. The ninth-seeded American hit eight aces on the way to reaching the second round for the fifth consecutive year.

On the women's side, no problems for defending champion Kim Clijsters in the first set of her meeting with Greta Arn.

The Belgian took the opener 6-0 in just 18 minutes before closing out the match 6-0, 7-5. Clijsters next meets Australian qualifier Sally Peers, who advanced to the second round with a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Canada's Aleksandra Wozniak.
