Michael Ballack will resume his duties as German captain when he returns to the national team after an injury layoff, winning a tug-of-war against Philipp Lahm who replaced him as skipper at the World Cup in South Africa.
German coach Joachim Loew held a news conference in Frankfurt to clarify who would be his captain. Loew confirmed Michael Ballack will return as captain once he is back to full fitness and in form, with Philipp Lahm as his deputy. Ballack is not expected to return to action for his country until next month at the earliest. The 33-year-old, who has won 98 caps and scored 42 goals, has said he was expecting to take over the role again after missing the World Cup due to an ankle injury, suffered when playing for Chelseas in the FA Cup final.
