At the World Basketball Championship, China took on Russia in a Group C encounter. And the game was a must-win game for China if they wanted to progress from the group. Anything else than a win and qualification to the latter rounds would be difficult.

-China opened the first frame strong, Yu Penglong nailed a pull-up jumper, giving China 21-15 lead at the end of the quarter.

-Early in the second, Yi Jianlian knocked down a baseline jumper as China stayed in a narrow advantage.

-But Russia battled back, launching a run midway through the quarter, Sergey Monya nailed a three as Russia took a 7 point turnaround lead

-China would regain their cushion late in the quarter, Liu Wei's drive-in basket put China ahead, with three point lead heading into the second half.

The lead would continue to ebb and flow in the third quarter. When the quarter came to a close, it was Russia who found themselves holding the slenderest of margins. 63-62.

In the final quarter the Russians, led by Sasha Kaun, completely took the game away from China as their shooting began falter at crucial moments, winning with relative ease 89-80.
