Many used to and still do follow the silk roads through Central Asia and beyond. Carlos Sainz took the Silk way Rally in Russia and was hoping to secure a second stage win, but he would be denied victory after finishing behind Giniel De Villiers.

Stage three covered 617 kilometers from Vyazma to Lipetsk. Many were expecting a two-way tussle between overall leader Carlos Sainz and title challenger Nasser Al Attiyah. But the surprise came from Volkswagen driver Giniel De Villiers who proved to be the dominant force. After starting the day back in fourth the South African charged ahead and looked determined to set an impressive pace. De Villiers pushed hard in the final third of the race to claim his second stage win of the year in a time of 2 hours 14 minutes 48 seconds.

stage win.

Sainz had difficulty in finding the right path and got lost in high grass losing precious time in their car. The Spaniard finished second on the stage one minute adrift of the winner. Nassar Al Attiyah crossed the line in third. The result ensures Sainz keeps control of the overall standings but his advantage has now been narrowed by De Villiers and Al Attiyah to just 1 minute 19 seconds behind the defending title holder.

In the truck category, Six time Dakar winner Vladimir Chagin suffered a setback over stage three despite setting the pace early on. However he struggled over the latter stages of the race and would lose 9 minutes 38 seconds to the day's winner, Firdaus Kabirov. He became the new overall leader in the points while second place went to Ales Loprais, who moves up to fourth in the standings as a result.
