It's all change at the top of the La Vuelta a Espana standings following Mikel Nieve's impressive ride to victory over stage 16. His first place finish means that Joaquin Rodriguez takes over the tours red jersey.

However, it was Vincenzo Nibali who began the day in the lead lead just four seconds clear of rival Joaquin Rodriguez. Nibali started one of the day's first breakaways, but the Liquigas rider was soon reeled back in by the pack.

With roughly 120km to go, the race settled into a predictable rhythm with Luis Sanchez of Caisse D'Epargne and Euskaltel rider Mikel Nieve leading the way. But with 40 kilometres remaining, Saxo Bank rider Frank Schleck began to close the gap on the lead pair and attack. Schleck retired from this year's Tour de France after a heavy crash and at one stage looked as though he might push on to take the lead. But It was Nieve who hung on to take the stage win in 4 hours, 51 minutes, 59 seconds, a little over on minute in front of Schleck in second, with Belgian Quickstep rider Kevin de Weert third.

Vincenzo Nibali struggled home in a disappointing tenth place. That result means Joaquin Rodriguez now assumes the overall leader's red jersey and is in front of Nibali by 36 seconds. Andy Schleck moves up to fourth in the riders' classification ahead of Tuesdays rest day.
