Nadal reaches Thailand open semi-finals

Men's top seed Rafael Nadal, back in action at the Thailand Open this week after a well deserved break after a win at the US Open, and he was looking to continue his winning run in Bangkok. Nadal, taking on Kazakhstan's Mikhail Kukushkin in the quarter-finals.

Nadal's serve was the model of consistency, failing to score on just three points on his first serve - an impressive 91 per cent success rate.

World number 83 Kukushkin started bravely against the world number one, but a crucial break took Nadal 4-2 up, and the Spaniard secured the first set 6-2 in 35 minutes with an attacking volley.

The top-seeded Spaniard generated an early break in the second set to build a 2-0 lead.

Play went with serve until Nadal built a 5-3 lead when he served two straight aces to close out the match.

The world number one needed just 71 minutes to wrap up a 6-2, 6-3 victory.

On Saturday he will meet Spanish compatriot Guillermo Garcia-Lopez, who beat Ernests Gulbis in just under two hours.

In the other half of the draw, Jarkko Nieminen of Finland reached his second semi-final of the year with an upset 6-3, 7-6 (4) win over number three-seeded Jurgen Melzer of Austria.

Nieminen will now face 2007 finalist Benjamin Becker of Germany, who needed less than an hour to beat Daniel Brands 6-4, 6-2 in their quarter-final.
