Fireworks on & off court at China Open

A memorable opening for the 2010 China Open has been held as many of the world's best players are here in Beijing. Fireworks, confetti and pigeons all part of the ceremony as the Deputy Mayor of Beijing announced the opening of the China Open.

The National Tennis Center celebrated the beginning of the China Open on the morning of National Day. The seeded players were busy on the training courts just outside of center court. America's Nadia Petrova and Ivan Ljubicic of Croatia are ready for all the upcoming challenges. Ljubicic's countryman Marin Cilic met his fans and last year's runner-up is hoping to meet his old rival and last year's winner Novak Djokovic. The defending Champion is in Beijing for the ATP 500 tournament and hopes he can do a repeat performance.

Yan Zi, caught a cold after the French Open this year, and never fully bounce back after that. She will only play in the doubles in Beijing.

Yan Zi, Chinese Player, said, I caught cold after French Open, and kept coughing and never stopped. I thought it's nothing serious. But, the cold getting more serious after U.S. Open. When I went to Guangzhou, I was coughing heavily. After training at South Korea and Ningbo city I had to go to hospital. And the antibiotics didn't work.

Yan Zi's partner is Maria Jose of Spain. The duo will show up on the double court later at the China Open.
