We continue here on Sportscene with golf's Ryder Cup and a rain ravaged day one at Celtic Manor in Wales.

The U.S. and Europe began the day on time but torrential rain led to play being suspended for seven hours in the early afternoon. Not one match was completed and there are concerns that the Cup may have to be extended into Monday.

American Dustin Johnson and Phil Mickelson took on Lee Westwood and Martin Kaymer in the Fourball. Westwood was the dominant force as he helped Europe to go one up at the second - and then doubled their lead by the fourth.

Former Open champion Stewart Cink led the charge for the Americans, alongside Matt Kuchar, but despite his fine putting it was the European duo of Rory McIlroy and Graeme Mcdowell who led early on.

Ian Poulter continued his fine Ryder Cup form alongside Ross Fischer. The pair led after the opening hole, then lost the second and regained the lead at the third in what looked to be a rollercoaster front nine.

Soon after a band of heavy rain moved in, forcing the suspension of play.

When the clouds did clear America staged an impressive comeback.

Phil Mickelson rolls in the Birdie at 10 to move to one down.

And Stewart Cink had the flat stick working, from jist off the green at five...he rolls in the monster birdie putt to brink the match level.

With darkness on the way, the day ended with the U.S. team leading two matches and all-square in another. Europe was leading one match.
