Rookie Lu Jinjing qualifies for China Open

We begin with the China Open and local hope Lu Jinjing who had the chance progress into the main draw. Lu took on Spain's Carla Suarez Navarro in the final qualification round.

54th Ranked Navarro may have been the favourite but Lu, raced out to a 1 set to love lead thanks to a solid 6-3 win.

And the second set would play out much the same, Lu, pushing Navarro to match point, and after a solid rally between the two, Navarro's return went wide.

Lu progressed into the first round by way of a 6-3, 6-3 victory.

Jelena Jankovic moves into round two

In first round play, third-seed Jelena Jankovic took on Klara Zakopalova from the Czech Republic.

Both players struggled to find their game in what turned out to be a somewhat sloppy match.

The two exchanged the first five points in the first before Zakopalova was able to take a 4-2 lead.

But Jankovic would recover to take the first set 7-5.

The second set, played out in much the same fashion. Jankovic, held on for a 7-5, 7-5 win to book her place in round two.

Patty Schnyder through to second round

Switzerland's Patty Schnyder was also in first round action as she took on Yaroslava Shvedova from Kazakstan.

Schnyder had Shvedova running all over the court in this one as she took the first set 6-1. Shvedova would run all day but but it would not pay off.

Schnyder was in total control, and took the match in straight sets 6-1, 6-4 to move into round two.
