Djokovic through to 2nd round of China Open

Over in the men's draw, top seed Novak Djokovic got his title defence off to a flying start by beating Chinese qualifier Gong Mao-xin. The 23-year-old Serb pummeled the local favorite who is appearing in only his second ATP tournament of his career. Djokovic's ruthless 6-1, 6-3 win took little more than an hour.

Murray wind in straight sets 6-2, 6-3

Andy Murray made his first appearance since his third round exit from the US Open last month. He found the going easy against Paul-Henri Mathieu, slamming home 10 aces en route to a 6-2, 6-3 victory, but admitted that his fitness and health were still not perfect.

Soderling beats Robredo 4-6, 6-1, 6-4

And finally, Robin Soderling survived an early scare to beat Tommy Robredo. Robredo stole an early march and took the first set 6-4, but the experienced Swede battled back ferociously to close out a 2-1 win.
