Asian Games return to China after 20 years

After a 20-year wait, the torch relay for the Asian Games has returned to Chinese soil. The relay signals the Games are right around the corner.  Organizers in Guanzhou are ready to build on the success of the 1990 Asian Games and the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing.

Guangzhou, a major city in south China covering an area of nearly 7,500 square kilometres.

The 2010 Asian Games will begin in November 12th and run until the 27th in Guangzhou along with three other co-host cities: Dongguan, Foshan and Shanwei.

It is estimated there will be more than 12,000 athletes from 45 countries participating in the Games. A total of 473 gold medals will be awarded.

Along with 28 Olympic competitions, 14 non-Olympic competitions unique to the Asian Games will be staged in Guangzhou.
A total of 42 events at this year's Asian Games will set a new record as the most ever.

After Guangzhou was announced as the host city of the Asian Games on July the 1st, 2004 and stadium construction soon became the focus of organizers.
Now six years later, 12 brand new venues are ready to go...along with 58 renovated structures.
Following the the closing ceremony of the Asian Games, the facilities will be used for the Asian Para Games in December.
