Asian Games torch relay arrives in Shanwei

We are now just over three weeks away from the start of the Asian Games. The countdown sits at 22 sleeps, and the flame that will light up the games was back on tour today. The Asian Games torch, setting down in Shanwei city, Guandong province.

The start and finish line of the day's relay was Mazu square in Shanwei city center.

Wu Wutang was the first runner to receive the torch nicknamed "The Tide".

Wu, one of China's top national sailors is currently the coach of the Guangdong sailing team. All sailing events for the Asian Games will be held in Shanwei city.

A total of 80 torchbearers took part in the 8.4-kilometer journey. The route passed by Binhu Avenue, Fitness Square and Yutaishan Mountain park.

The torch relay of the Asian Games is designed to build excitement, and also send a message of peace and friendship within Asia and to the rest of the world. Shantou will be the next stop for the torch relay.

Shanwei used to be named as "Shanmei" and it is so named as "shan" refers to the higher place of the beach while this place is famous for its beautiful seashore scenery. Later, as "mei" and "wei" has partial tone, it was renamed as "Shanwei", according to chinatravel.com. Full story >>
