A kayak champion in the Doha Asian Games and five-time National Games title-holder, Liu Haitao, was the first runner to receive the torch. A total of 80 torchbearers took part in the 8.8-kilometer route.

Popular sports figures and local industry representatives joined in carrying the flame, and nearly 20,000 local residents showed up to watch the festivities. 17th CPC National Congress representative Jia Dongliang was the last of the runners. He completed the proceedings by lighting the cauldron. The next leg of the torch relay will take place in Yunfu city today.

Media center meets high standard

As well yesterday, Asian Games officials evaluated the media center in Guangzhou. The center will provide information in five languages: Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Russian and English. The newsroom has working space for more than 700 journalists and photographers. It is the biggest newsroom in Asian Games history. There are three additional rooms where news conferences can be held. The Guangzhou media center received top marks from the committee.
