Chinese delegation sets targets for Asian Games

China is setting lofty goals for the upcoming Asian Games. Delegation leaders set a target to top the medal table again. Here's more from the group's first meeting with reporters in Guangzhou.

Vice-Chairman of the Chinese Olympic Committee Xiao Tian says China's delegation includes more than 1400 people. 974 of them are athletes, who will compete in 41 of the 42 sports at the Asian Games. Thirty-four Beijing Olympic champions will take part, and top starts like Liu Xiang will compete for victory on home soil. Xiao says apart from winning the most medals, the delegation has another mission to fulfill. More than 70 percent of the participants are younger athletes.

Xiao Tian said, "All the teams are required to use the Asian Games as a significant step to prepare for the London Olympic Games. Athletes need to test their training methods and level of competition, and the Games can help them collect more experience for the Olympics and other big sporting events."

Xiao says China will also strengthen its anti-doping efforts in Guangzhou.

"The Chinese Olympic Committee always upholds the principles of strict prohibition, prudent tests and severe punishments for doping athletes. We'll treat every case with zero tolerance."

Xiao also emphasized that China will use the games to further strengthen friendships with all Asian countries.
