The top players in men's tennis are working their way toward the season-ending ATP championship in London. Wimbledon finalist Tomas Berdych met Florent Serra at the Paris Masters on Tuesday, aiming to confirm his spot in the ATP Finals.

The fifth seed from the Czech Republic needed just 48 minutes to beat France's Serra 6-3, 6-1. Berdych booked a third round clash with tenth seed Nikolay Davydenko or Thomaz Bellucci. They will play on Wednesday.

Youzhny pulls out with injury

Mikhail Youzhny took on Ernests Gulbis in the second round, looking to maintain his chances of qualifying for the ATP finals. The ninth-seeded Russian withdrew from last week's tournament in Valencia with a back injury, and he was forced retire from this one, too. Youzhny trailed Gulbis 6-4, 3-0. He stood in 10th place in the ATP finals race, and needed to reach the last two in Paris to have a chance to qualify. Gulbis will next play either American eighth seed Andy Roddick, or Jarkko Nieminen of Finland.

Verdasco beats Clement in 3 sets

And Spain's Fernando Verdasco took on Frenchman Arnaud Clement. The Spanish sixth seed struggled to keep up with the 32-year-old Clement in the early stages. Then he rallied to win the last 10 games, and secured a 3-6, 6-3, 6-0 second round victory. Verdasco will now face French 12th seed Gael Monfils.
