Real Madrid made it through to the last 16 of the Copa Del Rey for the first time for three years on Wednesday, following an incident-packed 5-1 thrashing of third-tier side Real Murcia.

4th minute, Pedro Leon cut in from the right and found Esteban Granero, whose swerving right foot shot flashed past Murcia 'keeper Dani Hernandez.

39th minute, Mourinho found himself embroiled in a heated exchange with referee Paradas Romero. After the official had found a particular remark not to his taste, there was only going to be one winner of that contest and Mourinho was sent to the stands. It was indicative of how seriously Mourinho was taking the match - last season Madrid were humbled 4-0 at this stage by another third-tier side, Alcorcon.

Just before half time. Miguel Higuain found the net after getting on the end of a Junior Marcelo cross, but Sergio Ramos had wandered into an offside position and was standing right in front of the goalkeeper when the shot came in. It ought to have been an easy decision to rule out the goal, but after some confusion, Romero allowed it to stand and 2-0.

74th minute that Madrid scored again. All three were involved as Ronaldo converted a near-perfect Di Maria cross for his thirteenth goal of the season, but far from kiling the game off, it sparked a frantic finish. 3-0

81st minute

Alonso was judged to have handled in the penalty area and referee Romero pointed to the spot.- Pedro stepped up to make it 3-1 and - briefly - Madrid nerves began to jangle, but in reality Pedro's effort was the visitors' only shot on target all night.

Two minutes after that, the penalty count was evened up when Murcia midfielder Gotor fouled Di Maria - Kerim Benzema was given the responsibility of taking it and he scored with ease to make it 4-1.

In the 89th minute, Alonso fired a free kick.

5-1 was the final score and Madrid were through to the last 16 for the first time in three years by the same score on aggregate.
