Roger Federer came to Paris on a roll. He'd just won the Swiss Indoors, and now faced Richard Gasquet of France in the second round of the Paris Masters on Wednesday.

The top seeded Federer converted his first break point against the Frenchman for a 2-1 lead with a sharp forehand volley. Then he closed out the first set 6-4 with an ace. Federer lost only three points on his serve. The Swiss champ then took the second set with another 6-4 count. Federer sealed it on his first match point to improve his record against Gasquet to 7-1. He actually lost their first meeting five years ago.

In another match, fourth seed Robin Soderling of Sweden needed just 63 minutes, and scored 11 aces, to eliminate Frenchman Gilles Simon 6-4, 6-0. The Swede next meets Stanislas Wawrinka of Switzerland. But the local crowd did have something to cheer about. Frenchman Michael Llodra beat 16th seed John Isner of the United States 6-3, 6-4. Llodra's reward is a clash with the second seed, Serbia's Novak Djokovic.
