Veteran inspires new generation of Sri Lankan rugby

For 130 years the nation of Sri Lanka has had a proud rugby tradition. The first game, being played in the nation back in 1879. As rugby 7's made it Asian Games debut this year, Jonas Gilbart caught up with the team and discovered a team in transition with an unquestioned leader.

Among the young faces on the Sri Lankan Rugby 's side, one sticks out that of team Captain, 33 year old Radhika Hettierachchi. Radhika, the leader off and on the pitch.

At least a decade older than the majority of the members of his side, Radhika represents the old guard of Sri Lankan rugby. He leads by example.

One of the young lions expected to rise to prominance moving forward is massive 19 year old Shenal Dias. The naivety of youth shining through when told that his coach thinks he has a chance to be special.

For 130 years the nation of Sri Lanka has had a proud rugby tradition.

Shenal dreams of playing the game professionally in the future, and takes great pride in representing his nation. He has formed a special bond with the sides elder statesman.

Age may soon catch up with the team leader, but the lessons Radhika has left will last long into the future. In return, his young teammates have helped keep him young as well.

A passing of the torch at these Asian Games, as a new generation gets ready to carry it high for Sri Lanka, continuing the oldest rugby tradition in Asia.
