Champion League: Inter Milan advances knockout stage

Defending champion Inter Milan joined Manchester United and Barcelona as three of the seven teams advancing in soccer's Champions League.

Defending champion Inter Milan took on FC Twente. Inter's Esteban Cambiasso scored in the 55th minute, and the Italian club ended a five-match winless run in all competitions. Inter wins 1-0 and ties with Tottenham in their group with 10 points heading into the final round of games.

Barcelona moves on after 3-0 win

Barcelona took on Panathinaikos. The Spanish giants played a skillful match with Pedro Rogriguez grabbing his first goal in the 27th minute. Rogriguez netted his second in the 69th minute. Lionel Messi added his sixth goal in the Champions League this season, his 23rd in 18 games in all competitions. Barcelona won 3-0 at Panathinaikos, secures the top spot in Group D.

Man.United beats Rangers to advance

Manchester United took on Rangers in Glascow. Wayne Rooney returned to the Man U lineup to score the winning goal. The striker converted an 87-minute penalty kick. He's been sidelined since October with an ankle injury. It was just Rooney's second goal of the season. The win keeps United atop Group C with 13 points, three more than Valencia.

Schalke beats Lyon to advance

Schalke took on Lyon. Klaas-Jan Huntelaar had two goals and Jefferson Farfan scored one.

Schalke defeated Lyon 3-0 to send both teams through from Group B. AC Milan, Bayern Munich, Chelsea, Marseille and Real Madrid already nailed-down their spots in the round of 16. Four more spots are up for grabs in the final group games Dec.7 and 8.
