China faced South Korea in the women's basketball final match fighting for gold. The home side's tournament form heading into Guangzhou was dubious having finished in 13th place at the World Championship in the Czech Republic in September.

China made a bright start to the contest and opened the second quarter with a 19-6 run to take a lead for the rest of the game. With Zhang Fan's jump shot China moved 12 points ahead going into the second quarter.

The South Koreans never gave up and Guard Beon Yeon Ha led the fight back. They cut the deficit to 4 points by the end of the third quarter. Beon played the maximum 40 minutes to score 23 points.

The South Koreans came as close as 61-56 with four minutes left in the game.

Things could have got worse for China when captain Miao Lijie was sent off after faulting 5 times - it was just a case of hanging on in for the home team.
